Quizmaker and limiting retries

Apr 17, 2012

Hi all

Apologies in advance if this has been answered already but i am getting confused with some of the repsonses i am reading.

I want to be able to limit the amount of retires on an Articulate Quiz. The idea is that an initial test will be limited to 3 retries and then locks out (the delegates training record shows as in progress, they contact me and i assign a second duplicate test that it set to one retry...

I need a way of assigning tests and limited the amount of retires with "no holes" that allows more retries than set.

I have setup both tests one with 3 retries and one with 1.

My issue seems to be when i exit the test after failing, i seem to have unlimited retires (i am not using the retry button within the test rather just "relaunching it from within the LMS".. I cannot limit retries via the LMS so i am in a bit of a pickle.. Any help would be much appreciated

The best way I find is to set the number of attempts to 1, then limit attempts in your lms to 3.

If you cannot limit it in the LMS then your users will be able to retake as many times as possible.  You may be able to edit the scorm files to force it into review mode after the first attempt (that way you allow three attempts in quizmaker then each other time it loads the user will be in review mode and cannot alter their score) but I dont know how to do that

@Phil: I've been scouring the many threads here on the forums about this topic and understand very well at this point that the LMS must have some function to limit attempts for a learner in order to accomplish what most people, including myself, are looking for.

That being said, I'm having an extraordinarily difficult time finding any LMS that has this capability; seems to be a bit like searching for a needle in a haystack.  Are you (or anyone else) aware of any LMSs that are able to do this?  If so, I would enormously appreciate some help in locating them.

Thanks in advance..

Hi there Folks

I am still having no joy with the above. Am i right in thinking therefore that the limit retries feature is completely useless as at any stage i can exit and return to the test to reset the retry counter?

I have spoken with Cornerstone regarding this issue and they insist that limiting retires needs to be managed by the authoring tool!!

If anyone can shed any light on the above or offer any advice it would be greatly appreciated

Hi Noel.

We don't provide a way to limit the number of times you can have access to content in an LMS. Cornerstone is not correct that this functionality comes from the authoring tool. It can come from either, however this is not something we support. Basically Articulate content does not have a way to do this and Cornerstone does not have a way to limit attempts so that means you can't do what you are trying to do in the Cornerstone LMS.

Since this post was over 4 years ago I'm hoping there might be some new developments. I have the same problem with my LMS (Compliance Wire). I want the learner to have two attempts at a quiz, but if they fail I want the quiz to lock after the first attempt so that they must speak to an admin who will unlock the 2nd attempt. My LMS is saying this is something that is done in the authoring tool; however, I don't know how to do this. Does anyone know if this is something that can be done in Quizmaker and/or Storyline 2 now?

Hi Cassie! The attempts set within the software are only valid for the session that the user is in. I would advise that you set the attempt to 1 and then the user could contact the admin who could then re-set the attempts within the LMS. There is not a way to do so within the software, nor can we control what the LMS allows or the overall attempts.
