Quizmaker Hangs - Small rotating circle appears and freezes pane

When I preview the test, it works fine. If I publish the quiz by itself, it works.  But when I publish it within the course, after 2 questions, I get a small rotating circle which just stays and freezes the entire pane.  ESC doesn't work.  I tried removing the previous slide which had an embedded object that might have been a factor, but that didn't help.  I'm stumped.  Anyone have any ideas?  Something is corrupt but what and where?
