Randomize Question both in the Bank and in the whole quiz

Apr 01, 2020

Hello,

I need to create 4 question banks (to ensure that certain content types are represented). I know how to randomize within a bank. But, I also need to randomize the banks within the whole quiz.

So, for example,

Question 2 from Bank 3 and then Question 4 from Bank 4 and then Question 1 from Bank 2.

When I randomize questions and choose the number I want (say 2 from Bank 1) - I am getting always getting Bank 1 first and then Bank 2 and so on.

Is there a way to randomize both within banks and then within the entire quiz?

Thanks

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you're asking:

In a question draw that pulls from multiple banks, is it possible to randomize which bank the questions come from instead of starting at bank 1, then bank 2, etc.?

If so, it's not possible right now, but you may want to consider increasing the number of questions per bank to increase randomization.

I’ll be happy to pass your thoughts on to our product team regarding the banks but you can also feel free to detail them with your thoughts as well!

Hi Ren

This is also a feature I and the team of developers would like. I have submitted a request just now for this.

Another option, which would work, would it be possible to group questions in a bank and then randomize the choice of groups?

We have question scenarios, which we are trying to get randomized but without any joy.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for reaching out and submitting that feature request! To help clarify your questions:

Would it be possible to group questions in a bank and then randomize the choice of groups?

Questions groups in Quizmaker 360 work the same as question banks in Storyline 360 in that randomization will start with group 1, then group 2, etc.

You cannot group questions within a bank in SL360, as the bank is already considered a "group."

If I put a question on a slide layer, will the answer be reported to the LMS?

By default, quiz questions are built to be on base layers, and only one question can be submitted per slide. You can place custom-built questions on layers, but they will not report an answer to your LMS.

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have further questions!

Hi Ren

Thank you for your quick reply.

I haven't used Quizmaker 360, I assume this product has more options/functionality than the inbuilt features of SL360?

My issue is I have a client who wants 25 questions from a list of 218. This 218 is divided into 17 banks and he wants 1-3 questions from each bank, which is no problem. The issue is the last bank of 12 scenario questions of which the client wants just one to be used at random. But within these 12 scenario questions there are 5 multi-choice questions based on the scenario. Because of this I can not put all 12 scenarios with a total of 60 multi-choice questions within the same bank. If I make 12 banks of 5 questions then there appears no way to just randomly select just 1 of these banks for the quiz.

This is going to become an ongoing battle as the client wants similar scenario based questioning.

I just wonder if you or have you heard of anybody who has had to deal with a similar situation before and a possible fix.

Thank you very much for your help, it's massively appreciated.

Hi Adam,

Storyline and Quizmaker have the same question options, so it really boils down to how you plan to use the quiz.

  • If you plan to include the quiz in a Presenter presentation, I would use Quizmaker.
  • If you plan to include the quiz in a Storyline course, I would use Storyline.
  • If the quiz will stand alone, I would use either one!

That sounds like a tough scenario, and one I haven't come across. Hopefully others in the community chime in with their thoughts on how to successfully randomize specific questions!

Hi Mark

Thank you for your reply.

I tried to create my scenario questions in Quizmaker the scenario, but failed quickly as it appears Quizmaker doesn't support layers and I have a lot of supporting information including pictures for each question.

Thank you for your advice on what to use when.

I worked all day yesterday with various quiz options in SL360 and I think I may have a usable solution for the client. This is using either the 'matching drop-down' template with corresponding hover over buttons to access the information they need for each question or the 'drag and drop' template again using hover over buttons to access the extra information.

The issue with this is that I now have 5 questions on 1 base layer so i will need to weight this question higher also all I found the answers have to be all different (no two answers the same) otherwise confusion will ensue as what could be seen as a correct answer could be used for the wrong question.

It's a work in progress, but just to reiterate if the question banks in SL360 could also be randomized for use in a quiz that would be great. I will have to wait to see if this idea gets implemented.

Again thanks Ren

Hi Adam,

Thank you for sharing those details with us!

To make sure I am on the same page, are you wanting to know if question banks themselves can be randomized or the questions within a bank? If it is for the questions within a bank, there is an option to randomize the question draw! We have a great resource that provides more details on that here:

If that isn't exactly what you were looking for, please let us know!

Hi Vincent

Thank you for your reply.

I would like the option to randomize the question banks. I do randomize the questions, but with this type of scenario questioning using set data it can not draw the questions I need from the current tools available to me.

The client has 12 scenarios and each scenario has 5 questions. He wants to pick just 1 from the 12 for the test. But each scenario has 5 questions and I know SL360 only reports to the LMS on the base layer. So as a workaround I have developed a drag and drop question with all questions on the base layer and question information on other selectable layers. Not ideal for what we want, but I think this is the best out of all other options.

I have requested a function to randomize the question banks, as I know I am going to require this a lot.

Thanks

Adam
