Retake a Question After Answer-Level Feedback

Sep 21, 2013

I am seeking expertise to help me create the following question scenario:

Given a question, if the user selected the wrong answer, a feed back slide with hints will be display, the user is then given the opportunity to retry this question again. S/he cannot proceed to the next question until the correct answer has been selected for the current question.

Below is what I have attempted.

I have setup a question with one feedback slide for each of the choices in the question. The feedback slides for the wrong choice selection would branch the user back to the question to retry again.  The feedback slide for the

correct answer branches the user onward to the next question. The problem is when I set the question's Attempts  setting to 1 and the user selected the wrong answer, Quizmaker will show the appropriate feedback slide and then branch the user back to the question. However, the question no longer accepts further attemps.

BUT, if I change the question's Attempts parameter to unlimited; the feedback slides for the wrong answers are no longer presented; however, when the user is branched back to the question, s/he can retry again. S/he will see the feedback slide only when the correct answer has been provided before moving onto the next question.

Any ideas?

Hi BJ and welcome to Heroes!

You mentioned when setting it to more than 1 attempt, the feedback slides for the wrong answers are gone - but how are they able to branch back to the original question then?  If you set the question to "unlimited" or more than one attempt, the expected result would be for the user to try that question again right then until they get it correct- without having to set up the branching back to the question.

Are you able to share your .quiz file here with us? If you prefer to not post it in the forums, you can also send it privately to our Support team.

Hi Ashley,

I have attached a simple and basic sample file that demonstrates what I described.  I am currently using version '09.

Regarding your replied " If you set the question to "unlimited" or more than one attempt, the expected result would be for the user to try that question again right then until they get it correct- without having to set up the branching back to the question", what i Iwanted to do is to provide a slide (not a prompt message) with hints when the learner selected the wrong answer. The slide with the hint will branch the user back to the question.

Regards,

BJ

(PS - I used the paper clip above to attach and upload the quiz file. I hope it has been uploaded since I cannot see it. Let me know if receive it at your end.)

Hi BJ,

Thanks for sharing your file - it helped me visual a bit more what you were looking for. The branching set up is designed more for taking the user to a new question or content slide based on how they answer. The prompts you're trying to create won't appear when attempts set to unlimited as they never leave the question to be branched somewhere else. If you set it to one attempt, you would be branched to the slide - but then unable to try the question again. I think for what you're looking to do, you'll need to customize the feedback prompt instead of trying to create new branching slides, unless you are ok with them not being able to retry the question, but at least finding out the answer.
