Saving essay survey responses in '13

Jan 08, 2014

Hi all,

I'm using Articulate Studio '13 to create reflective essay questions in an elearning course which I'm hosting on Moodle 1.9.

I know that the '09 version gave the option for users to email their results to a specified email address, but this feature doesn't appear to be available in '13 (or I can't find it). At the moment, the "print" option seems to be the only way to save long form answers (as in users have to save them themselves).

Is there any way to save/export long form answers (essay text the users enter) to a spreadsheet or Moodle gradebook?

Hi Rebecca and welcome to the community!

That's correct, the option to email results was retired with both Storyline and Studio '13.

Here's more information:

'13 Doesn't Include an Email Results Feature

We want every feature in our software to work well. Unfortunately, there’s no way to email results easily, accurately, and consistently. For example, if you use Gmail or your computer’s security settings are high, you can’t email results. Also, you run the risk of learners tampering with results since they can access the email before it’s sent. Given these limitations, we decided not to include the email results feature in our products anymore.

The print option may be the best method, to be honest. The only other options that come to mind would actually take more time for you or the learners.

I'd love to hear of any alternatives you find, or of any suggestions from the community, as well.

Newer versions of Moodle allow you to export the SCORM data in a much clearer format - the "interactions" report in Moodle 2 includes the survey responses and allows export to excel, csv etc.

Also important to note that the Moodle 1.9 branch is over 6 years old and is no longer supported - you should be upgrading to a more recent supported release - especially if you are reliant on SCORM. SCORM works a lot better in newer Moodle releases - for example Moodle 2.6 includes a range of improvements to allow SCORM to work better on Mobile devices.
