Scoring first attempts

May 28, 2011

Hi folks

I'm brand new to QM, so please excuse me if this question has been asked before.  I am converting my suite of multiple choice quizzes from Hot Potatoes to QM.  I want my students to be able to make unlimited attempts (since I provide feedback on both incorrect and correct responses) and to only progress when they choose the right answer.  QM will do that.  But one piece of functionality in Hot Potatoes is that it will score first attempts.  I haven't seen a way of doing that in QM - is there a way I'm missing?  At the moment I've had to turn all scoring off (otherwise, with unlimited attempts when they finally choose the correct answer they are credited with getting the question right whether it was their first or subsequent attempt) .  While my quizzes are a formative exercise, I know some of my students still like to see a score so they can gauge their progress.

Hi Brian

No, I'm wanting them to be able to make unlimited attempts so that if they choose the wrong response they receive feedback on why the response is wrong but cannot progress until they choose the right response (when they receive more extensive feedback on the question). From what I can see, however, if I assign a mark for the correct response they will always get 100% on the quiz because they will eventually always choose the correct response whether that was on their first, second or third attempt.

Hi Des,

What if you make the Quiz unlimited and the questions a single attempt? That way they get a score for their initial efforts, but can still retake the quiz until they pass.

If you don't want them stuck in a loop retaking the whole quiz multiple times because of one tough question, you could have the fail branching action of the quiz send them to a second, hidden version of the quiz that has unlimited attempts for each question enabled. Using two near identical quizzes lets you change the settings for additional attempts. Just be careful if you are using LMS tracking, since you would only be able to retain the score of only one of the quiz instances, but it sounds like that's less important in your case then having a good self evaluation.

Thanks for that.

There are 160+ questions across 8 modules.  I'd rather not put them in a loop.  Your second method might be a good work around but I quite like the quick pop up for incorrect responses (and have already created most of the questions on that basis).

On its face, it seems a relatively simple option to add (although I don't have a programming background).  Is there a wishlist for future editions I might add this to?
