state.xml file - what's the purpose?
Aug 02, 2011
Hello all,
I'm publishing quizmaker quizzes to be uploaded to an LMS, but Quizmaker '09 includes a hidden file called state.xml. What is the purpose of this file? My LMS doesn't allow me to overwrite read only files (and I'm assuming hidden files as well), so I have to be careful with this when uploading courses and quizzes because it limits my ability to replace course files on my own.
As it is, when I upload a quiz to the LMS now, and then try to replace the files, the state.xml file, even though I've changed it from hidden to normal, is messing up the upload process.
I know I need to work through this with my LMS vendor as well, but I need to understand the purpose of the state.xml file and determine if the quiz will work without it.
Thanks!
Kari

Hi Kari,
The state.xml file is used by Quizmaker to determine what files need to be republished if something has changed in the quiz. I'd recommend keeping that file in your published contents when you upload it to the LMS.
So essentially it is a tracking file for quizmaker when publishing. Why would it be needed by the LMS?
Hi Kari,
Feel free to remove the file. However, if you run into any issues, you'll want to make sure you re-include the file.
