Timer help please!

Feb 23, 2019

I'm trying to build a project that involves a timer. The idea is that when a steak is on a grill and the timer reaches a certain time, the steak is taken off the grill. If the steak is taken off at the correct time, the steak is correctly cooked, but if the steak is not taken off at the correct time, the steak is in correct. I have 3 steaks to cook for different times. How do I show the results? On a separate layer or a separate slide? And how would I set up the triggers?

Any advice gratefully received, thank you

Hi Kate,

This was a fun challenge !

In the attached file I have set up three variables, Seconds, Minutes and SteakOnGrill. Off the bottom left of the slide you will see a small blue square. This moves along a very short straight line motion path every second and is used to increment the Seconds variable. When this reaches 60, it increments the Minutes variable and is reset to zero to start the seconds count all over again. These elements create your cooking timer.

The timer will only count when the SteakOnGrill variable is True and this will only occur when the steak is dragged onto the grill (the target is actually a transparent oval covering the top of the grill). When the steak is dragged back onto the plate, cooking stops and the counter stops accordingly.

If you determine how long you want the steak to be cooked (e.g. for medium rare, medium and well done), you can then compare those times against the Minutes and Seconds variables to determine if it is over-cooked, under-cooked or perfect. You could then display this information as an additional layer, which is triggered by the steak being returned to the plate.

The additional variables MinWord and SecWord and their associated triggers are there purely to ensure the statement at the bottom of the slide regarding the cooking time is grammatically correct (e.g. 1 minute and 6 seconds as opposed to 1 minutes and 6 seconds). These can be removed if you don't need them without affecting the rest of the slide.

If you have problems with your triggers for the cooking times, just get back to me.
