Audio will take up a track, because it's an inserted element. The only way you could have audio in the project and not have it on one of the tracks, is to include it in a video or recording.
For example, you can record using your internal sound (if your sound card and/or speakers support this), or you can import a video that already contains the audio.
If you could tell us a little more about what you're wanting to do in your project, maybe we can share some suggestions.

I am able to do what I wanted to do, just used to having audio as a seperate track, then one for video and one for stills etc.
