Can Articulate Studio capture screencast with Navigation arrows?

Dec 10, 2013

In our company, a few employees downloaded the free trial of Storyline and created a course that includes a screencast. In their screencast they have arrows and comment boxes navigating the user through. Since our company has already purchased the Studio Package, we were wondering if there is any way that Presenter and/or Replay would help us acheieve the same results? Basically, we are wanting to have a screencast and voiceover with annotating arrows and comments guiding the user to the next step. Please let me know if this is possible in Studio. Thanks.

Hi Merlyn,

Great question :) However, Studio doesn't include the same type of functionality you're looking for. From what you described, it sounds like the screencast from Storyline was either a "Try mode" screencast, or they added custom prompts to the screencast within Storyline.

Replay's lower thirds may help with displaying content to users. You could use the logo and text prompt to bring attention to specific points in the recording. While you won't be able to do exactly the same with arrows, you could always make the image for the lower third an arrow - maybe that would help.

Example in Replay:

Put the topic of the prompt in as the title.

Add additional information on the topic into the "Subtitle" field.

If you'd like, you can attach an image for the logo - you could even use arrows pointing in different directions.

We have some great shapes that are available as free downloads here. Maybe one of those shapes would help?

One thing to note is that the "Subtitle" text will scale to fit the lower third. The more you have, the smaller the text will be. I would recommend keeping the content short, just to be sure that the text is always large enough to catch the learner's attention, especially if the prompt is only up for a short amount of time.

Here's a very quick example:

You can probably do much better than that example - I just wanted to give you a quick one that would show an option that might work for you. I didn't think about the black along the bottom. However, you can see what I mentioned about the amount of text in the subtitle field and how the size adjusts.

I hope this helps!
