Drawing Attention to Specific Areas in a Replay Video

Jan 22, 2019

I'll be creating my first Replay video this week.  I've reviewed the video tutorials but I'm wondering if it's possible to add circles, arrows, shading/highlighting to a Replay video to draw attention to certain areas on the screen?

Hi Shawn,

If you are looking to produce a standalone video, I don't believe there is a way to do what you want from within Replay. If, however, you are producing the video to use as part of a Storyline or Rise course, then the solution is a simple one.

The first thing you do is to create a new slide in Storyline and insert your video. You then create additional layers containing the highlights, shading or even notes that you wish to superimpose on your video and finally create triggers to turn these various layers on and off at the required time.

If you intend to use the video in a Rise course, you still create it in Storyline, publish it to Articulate 360 and then insert it into your Rise course using a Storyline block, which is available from the Interactive section in the Blocks menu.

I hope the attached example will help.

Hi Shawn,

I realise I probably should have added a bit more detail to my last post in case you are not fully conversant with how to turn your layers on and off, so I hope the following is useful if you are in need of a bit more help.

The way I have done it in the Video Highlight Example in my previous post is to first set up a trigger to Show layer Highlight 1 when timeline starts, which then shows the layer for the entire duration of the slide. The next stage is to refine that such that the highlight is only visible when you want it to be.

This is achieved by first selecting the Highlight 1 layer, right clicking on the highlight shape in the timeline (in my case "Oval 1") and then selecting Timing from the menu:

This then brings up the timing options dialogue. If you don't intend to have the layer visible for the entire time the slide is showing or if you don't want it visible until the end of the slide, irrespective of when it first appears, make sure you deselect the appropriate check boxes in the options dialogue. You can now set the start time and duration for your highlight layer to be visible.

If you have deselected the appropriate check boxes and your highlight appears correctly, but does not disappear when you expect it to, you will probably find that the End bar on your layer timeline coincides with the start time plus the duration that you have set for your highlight. If this is the case, simply drag the End bar to the right so that there is a gap between it and the shape block in the timeline (see in the top image that Oval 1 ends at 10 sec and I have dragged the End bar to 11 sec so they don't coincide.

Repeat this process for each layer you wish to turn on and off during your video.
