A Corrupted Storyline File

Jul 21, 2014

I had created a module using Storyline and put it on Articulate online for colleagures to review. With feedback I went in to change the odd typo and re-uploaded it on Friday thinking nothing the more about it, upload appears normal. Colleagues who looked at it over the weekend reported no audio in places, obvious pictures missing. I checked in online and yes, it wasn't right at all.

I have gone back to my module file, opened it and on the Scene view everything looks normal - the little screenshots of each slide are as they should be, background, text, photos. When I click on an individual slide to go and edit it, the slide is then missing audio, background, pictures etc.

Any ideas on what causes this corruption and more importantly can I retrieve and rectify?

Thank you!

Hi Rebecca,

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

I'm very sorry to hear about the trouble - corruption is never fun, and sometimes it's difficult to pinpoint the cause of corruption.

First, I always strongly recommend checking the file location of all project files and file names/paths:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

Please make sure you're running the most recent version of Storyline. Articulate Storyline Update 5 includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and HTML5 output enhancements. Click here for details.

Also, it's important to make sure you're not copying and pasting content into your Storyline project. This includes images, some text, and media. If you need to bring this content into your course, please make sure you're importing it.

One way to reuse content from an existing Storyline course is to import the slide(s) from the existing project. This is also sometimes a helpful way to recover a corrupted file. Import the original content into a new, blank Storyline project:

Again, I am sorry for the trouble.

Please let us know if you see any improvement!

Christine
