A few questions about quiz slides and using variables

Aug 06, 2014

Hi. I'm planning to use Storyline for a project in which I use a numerical variable to keep track of the learner's score. The learner will play a superhero and the decisions he/she makes will increase or decrease the value of the variable.

I'm wondering if I can combine this use of the variable with quiz slides. For instance, if I use a free-form drag and drop slide, can I increase the value of the variable when the learner drags the correct object onto another object? Similarly, can I use a Multiple response slide so that when the learner picks the correct choices then the variable's value will be increased?

I wasn't sure whether I could create triggers to increase the value of the variable on quiz slides because quiz slides have their own built-in scoring which occurs without setting up triggers. And I know I'll need to set up some triggers to change the value of the variable used for scoring.

Thanks!

D.

Hi D.,

If I understand correctly, I don't see why you can't use Quiz slides. Please refer to the attached really simple, for-functionality-proof-of-concept only .story.

I've created a numeric variable called SHpoints with a default value of 0.

Slide 1 is a T/F quiz slide.

A value of 1 is added to SHpoints when Learners click Continue from the correct layer

A value of 1 is subtracted from SHpoints when Learners click Continue from the incorrect layer

Slide 2 is a nonquiz slide

A value of 1 is added to SH points when Learners click the Next button IF the oval is selected

A value of 1 is subtracted to SH points when Learners click the Next button IF the rectangle is selected

Slide 3 is a nonquiz slide

A value of 1 is added to SH points when Learners click the Next button IF the happy face is selected

A value of 1 is subtracted to SH points when Learners click the Next button IF the the confused face or the stressed face is selected

Slide 4 is a Matching Drag and Drop

A value of 1 is added to SHpoints when Learners click Continue from the correct layer

A value of 1 is subtracted from SHpoints when Learners click Continue from the incorrect layer

I've placed a reference to the SHpoints variable at the top of slides 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5
