If you are naming the variable in the Javascript window and using %name%, you can check the name by creating your variable in the Variable form supplied in Storyline and you will see % is not an accepted character in the name.
In short you should remove the % from each side of the var name.
Unfortunately I have same problem again, and now it is also without Hebrew line:
When I put a variable in a text box on a new slide (%variable%) and preview it - everything is OK. But if I add another variable to the same slide or to an existed slide, I get in preview the following:
This is a bit of a stab in the dark but have you tried renaming your problematic variable? This has not happened to me in Storyline but in other software, sometimes custom variables could get confused with default system variables if named very generically...

Are you putting % in the variable name or value?

Best of luck.
No, I did not put % in the variable name. But I wrote %Variable1% as a part of text line that contained Hebrew letters.
I later tried it out off the Hebrew text square and it looks good now.
Thank you for your fast response!

Thank you Shwetha,
I have tried it in the past, without success. It is OK now, from unknown reason. It comes and goes.
