A way to play a video from start to end point without the need to segment it and re-encode?

Sep 27, 2017

Hi guys,

Anyone to know a way in Articulate Storyline to play videos from particular "start" to particular "end" point without trimming, segmenting and re-encoding the video? We have a long 5 min video, part of a 6 Modules Training session, with 7 Steps and need the learner to be able to jump and play just a particular step from the video as well as the whole video. We really don't want to embed multiple video files since it's pointless.

Thanks,

Tsvety

Thanks, Brian for the comment, however we bought Articulate and our video courses are hosted at Amazon S3 - we do not publish them on those 3rd party sites like VIMEO, YouTube... Plus videos embedded from those sites are pain to trying to make them work in Articulate not to mention can't be controlled. Plus many years ago Macromedia Flash had the ability to control the embedded video through cue point and chapters, so it's not something new as an expectation.

Thanks, Matthew, for the solution! If we decide to go that way I'll surely have questions for you :) For now, however I had to embed that video practically twice into Storyline - once as a whole and then as 7 segmented videos as steps, since we had to publish this training session in a rush yesterday. Unfortunately, this is very ugly workaround since it's practically waste of resources and traffic :(

Thanks,

I guess another alternative is to chop your video up and have a trigger to show video 1, and that goes to a lightbox (I'm not a fan of the lightbox but it could work in this case) and can do that from anywhere in the course, same with videos 2, 3, 4, etc.

If you want to watch the whole thing, have a home-made "next button" of sorts on the screen, hidden. If the lightbox was opened from someone wanting to view the whole video, set a variable to show "change state of 'next' button to Normal when media complete if variable X is True".

This should save on course size and bandwith.

In this example, orange would be the lightboxes, purple arrows launch it from a particular slide, and red would be with the variable to show the "next" button.

Perhaps this will work for you.

Hi Michael,

I've already had to chop the video on pieces, however what you are suggestion is not working in our case since our video has an audio track - background music plus voice, which is  all the way through the video. Also we do have visual representation over the video of when in time are the steps and we need when the learner plays the video as a whole to have video controls present at all time with the ability to jump through the video. Additionally when I tried playing the segments one after another automatically the transitions between them where choppy (with pauses between them and cuts in the sound) and the whole course looked and sounded unprofessionally done. So finally I had to embed the video practically twice. Once as a whole and then as segmented steps.

Thanks,

Tsvety
