Access to and Modification of Quiz scores

Hello,

I notice that when I add a Results page for a quiz, a set of new variables suddenly appears. However....

These variables are not available in the usual way - although they can be inserted manually and displayed e.g. %Results.ScorePoints% in a text field.

Is there a listing of these variables somewhere? Is there a description of an approved way of accessing the variables either directly or through javascript? I would like to modify the ways in which the scoring is done but I do not want to disrupt the ways in which scores are reported to LMS.
