Access variables on iPad app

Jun 03, 2013

HI all,

We have written an assessment which is loaded onto the iPad (and set as offline) to be used within the classroom.

This asks a number of 'open' questions which the user types in. These get saved as variables.  Once submitted, the results are shown for the questions that have 'actual answers' where as the text is shown as %variable% within text boxes.

A couple of users have gone through this and we can see their information, but unfortunately...., the text box shows it very small (i.e. the text box is set to shrink the text and not added a scroll bar! )

We will amend the quiz for the next course but wondered if there was any creative way that we can still get the results/variable data off of the iPad?  Long shot, but I hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Hi Andy,

Are you using custom fonts for the text variable, by any chance?

When you include variable references in text boxes, you may find that the font applied to the variable reference does not display as expected in HTML5 output or the Articulate Mobile Player app for iPad.

Custom fonts cannot be embedded in the HTML5 player or the iPad app. As a result, variable references will be displayed using the default fonts of the system or device on which the content is being viewed.

Note that custom fonts can be embedded in the Flash Player, so this issue will not occur in the Flash version of the same Storyline content. For full comparison of Storyline's Flash, HTML5, and Articulate Mobile Player output, click here.

If you change the font, does the same scaling occur in the course?

Thanks!

Hi Andy,

Afraid I'm not entirely clear on your last question. Are you wanting to send the information they enter in the course to their own machines? If so, I'm not sure how you'd be able to accomplish that.

If you're referring to tracking, you'd need to us an LMS (if you're not already) and it would depend on whether or not you're using HTML5, or publishing for the Articulate Mobile Player.

Thanks!

Hi,

We just want to be able to access the variables held inside a pre-taken course on the iPad.

We used Storyline to develop an assessment where the user watches a video then writes some notes about the video into the text box.  This is then ultmately saved into a variable.

This variable is shown later in the 'results' section for the trainer to review and mark.  Unfort, they are unable to see this text as it is shown very small and  unreadible. see below screenshot for example.

Hi Andy,

This looks like what you were describing earlier - did you try adjusting the fonts?

As for getting access to the variable, Storyline doesn't automatically report these. However, you can use the following method to send the value of the variable to an LMS:

How to send the value of a variable to an LMS

Hi,

Ok - thanks - will check out the LMS option for future projects.

I am still getting the issue of the shrinking text with the Articulate font (this even happens inside articulate.)

I have a text box which has a variable inside (displaying something written in an earlier slide).

This is over a scrolling box.

The text seems to shrink when lots of text is displayed, even with the option turned off (within properties - text box).

Is this a bug or can it be fixed?

Thanks,

Hi Andy!

Thanks very much for the file, this helps :)

I think the issue is because the actual text box containing the variable is smaller that the text input for the variable.

If you adjust the size of the textbox to fit the scrolling panel, it seems to resolve the issue.

I'm attaching the file with these changes, if you want to take a look.

Thanks!
