Accessibility: Customising tab order and access to Resources and Menu in the SL Player

Sep 10, 2018

Hi,

I am building a course that uses the SL Player and we have noticed:

  • The Resources button does not provide access to each item individually, and has no options to close once opened.
  • The LH Menu does not provide access to screens individually.

Does anyone have any information about how these can be customised?

Thanks in advance, Kim.

Hi Kim and Priyanka!

Good news! We are no longer seeing this bug in the latest version of Storyline 360 (Build 3.72.29699.0) where resource links aren't easily accessible when using the tab key and screen readers only read the first resource link.

To insure you don't continue to see this bug download the latest version of Storyline 360 via the Articulate 360 desktop app. Here's an article on how to do that.

Please let us know if you're still noticing the issue, and we'd love to continue troubleshooting with you in a support case.

Hi there, Kim.  Thanks for reaching out!  I did a quick test with both the classic and modern players to see how accessibility was working with the players.  Here's what I found:

  • Classic Player example:  Once I tabbed to the Resources, I hit the space bar to open the list.  I tabbed to the list, and then used the arrow keys to select individual resources.  When they were highlighted, I was able to use the space bar to open each item.  To close the Resources tab, I tabbed back to Resources and hit space again.

I had the same experience with the Menu.  Once the Menu was opened and selected, I could highlight each slide with the arrow keys and use space bar to jump to those slides.
  • Modern Player example:  I did the same process as above, but I noticed that I could not select my Resources individually, even with the arrow keys.  I could close the Resources by tabbing back and using the space bar.  The Menu tabbing and arrowing worked the same as above.

Thanks for bringing this behavior up!  Can you check my links above (and yours!) and let me know if you see the same?

I'm going to document the Modern Player Resources issue so we can get to work on making sure that list is accessible.

Hi,

I am facing the similar issue with classic player resources tab. Jaws only reads the first item in and does not move to the next items with any of the key. i tried everything up and down arrow key, page up and down key, tab key, but it does not work.

Kindly suggest.

Regards,

Priyanka

Hello Priyanka, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊

I appreciate you sharing what you are experiencing with your project file.

I see a similar bug documented by our team for investigation:

Resource links aren't easily accessible when using the Tab key, and screen readers only read the first resource link.

I wanted to share some information on how we define bugs and tackle them when they occur. I've added this conversation to our report to share any updates with you here.

I'm curious if you can:

  • Press "Alt+Tab" to go back to the Resource menu and then tab through the resource links or use the arrow keys
