I am building a course with a superhero theme. I want to build in the idea that as they accomplish certain tasks, they get a token reward. I would really like a way for the learner to see how many they have collected. Is there a way in SL 2 to have a "counter" that would show across slides and keep track of how many tokens the learner has earned?

Yes, you could put the counter on the master slide and add triggers that update it based on a counter variable value.
