Adding a course to an iPad completely off line

Feb 22, 2016

I have this ongoing issue with uploading courses to an iPad. I work for an Aerospace company and produce many courses that have special Intellectual Property issues, which means that I cannot upload my courses to a public website or file sharing service, for example: Dropbox or Google Drive. Our current solution is to have an isolated server that is not connect to any network, and uses a router that sends a Wi-Fi signal to the iPad, however sharing these courses with our clients is a major problem as we will usually have to go to our clients offices and set up a server or invite them to our office just to get a few iPads loaded up.

I was recently at the Learning Technologies event in London and was recommended to use a file repository app like Fileapp or MyDocuments on the iPad, if attempt to open the course via the amplaunch.html file the course should open up and work as intended. However, even though the Articulate Mobile app opens up I receive a Cannot Download Content error message.

So, do you know of an app that will work in a similar way described above or if not how can I get files onto the iPad without having to upload to a web server? I have read all the documentation on the Articulate website with no success.

Many thanks

Luke

Hi, Luke -- Thanks for your question! Have you had a chance to review this information on Publishing a Project for iPad or HTML5 yet, by chance?

This section may help answer your question:

Do Learners Need to Be Connected to the Internet to View My Course on an iPad?

Initially, learners must be connected to the internet to view your course on an iPad. However, you can allow learners to download your course for offline viewing once they've added it to their library. See Downloading Content for Offline Viewing.

If you need tracking and reporting capabilities, your learners will need to be connected to the internet at the time they view your course—otherwise, your course won’t be able to communicate data to your your LMS or to Articulate Online, whichever you’re using. (For more details, see “How can I track and report on learner progress if I publish for iPad or HTML5,” below.)

Is it out of the question to upload the course to some password protected web space via FTP?

You could then simply give the client the URL, user name and password and they can download the course via the Articulate mobile player app for off line viewing if necessary.

Alternatively, a service like SCORM Cloud is secure and confidential and is trusted by plenty of large organisations.
