Adding a phone # in a mobile course

Jul 16, 2014

Hi all,

Has anyone ever added a phone # to a mobile course and made it active so that the user can make a call from the link?

I was thinking that, if you add a phone # as a hyperlink and then publish the course as an html 5 or SCORM 1.2 [uploaded to a mobile LMS], will you be able to use the # to automatically call the number.

Thanks,

Angie

I haven't tried this. It might work if (say) you have Skype click-to-call installed on your PC AND enabled on your web browser, but that doesn't mean everyone does. Additionally, you are correct in your assumption that you would have to use HTML5 for this to have a chance to work - it definitely won't on flash.

I would recommend against something like that since the functionality would not be consistent across devices.

Hi Angie,

I totally agree with Alex.

One other thought, though - some phones (if you intend to use them for this) will recognize a phone number when it's selected. That might be something to consider. For example, you could have this pre-filled in a text box that learners can select.

Again, though, as Alex said this could get complicated across devices. If you're going to do this, I'd say it might be a good idea to develop a course specifically for this feature that learners can use on their phones or devices with calling abilities.

If nothing else, just let them copy and paste the number - that may save you some time and extra work! :)

Best of luck,

Christine
