Adding hotspot question to existing screenshot slides - SoftSim

Feb 13, 2013

Hi,

I'm using the trial version of Storyline and trying to create a simple ms excel software sim to sell my boss. Because Microsoft highlights whatever button you may mouse over (effectively giving away the answer to 'where to click next') I recorded a few extra screenshots without those moused-over highlights. I recorded this to be a testing simulation so it automatically created a quiz using all of my clicks as the questions. My problem - how do I create hotspots in the extra 'user screenshot' slides that I recorded and placed in-line, and have it act like a quiz question with success/failure layers and filter to the results slide at the end? I've tried copying from 'hotspot' slides but the interaction in the triggers window is 'unassigned' and offers no options to select.

Thanks,

Brandon

Hi Brandon,

Are you aware that you can edit out those "inadvertent prompts" that Microsoft ...er....supplied by using Action >Fine tuning

You can read a bit about it at Editing Screen Recordings

There's also a bit about it here

And I think Tom Kuhlmann may have done a post about it, but not sure when or where :(

So, that may be a better solution to what you're trying to do. As for the rest of the question, unsure - would re-recording and using fine tuning to edit out the hints resolve your issue?

I'll have to keep learning regarding the fine tuning option to filter out those annoying highlights. But I can see future needs to add graded hotspots to existing screenshot slides that were not originally set up as quiz slides. Does anyone know of a way to do this? My boss will want there to be feedback if someone clicks the wrong area. Can't seem to do that with the hotspots I'm adding to my extra screenshots.

Hi again Brandon,

Regarding your boss wanting there to be feedback if someone clicks the wrong area, again, that can be done with Try It Mode by adding a trigger. Take a look at this thread: http://community.articulate.com/forums/p/24584/135697.aspx#135697

If I was interpreting correctly!

As for the screen shots, any chance you can upload part of your story to take a peek at?

Thanks for the suggestions. Rebecca, your suggestion for the fine tuning tool worked great on a redo after I knew what I was looking for. Going forward, that is great to know. I'm going to play with layers and the feedback options you suggested later today. Pam, converting to freeform was what I was looking for initially. I didn't yet understand the different slide types in Storyline. Both ways accomplished the goal. Thanks to you both for the quick replies!
