Have you set the layer up to hide the elements on the base layer? If so, when you visit the layer, you will only see/hear the elements on that layer instead of allowing the items from the base layer to come through. That setting is available for each layer from the layer properties - little cog icon to the right hand side.
Thanks Ashley for your reply. Yes I had unticked all the settings in the Layer Properties but it still shows black. When I click around the black screen I can find my layer content. It's odd as it was working the day before yesterday. I can work around this by adding them as new screens however it still effects my quiz feedback layers.
I'd check Phil's suggestion as well - but since you mentioned it was ok one day and then changed the next, I also wanted to see if you could confirm that you're working as described below on your .story files:
You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.
If you're still having difficulty after checking into the above items, can you share that .story file with us (even that one slide with it's feedback layers)?
Thanks everyone for your help! Yes it was the Feedback Master background style. I changed to 'no fill' and it now works.
I have an additional issue you may also be able to help me with. When I use dot points, the final dot point is always black. I have deleted any dot points before cutting and pasting text into the program. Any ideas how to fix this?
If you add bullets or numbering to a list, then adjust the font size or color, you may find that the last bullet/number doesn't match the rest of the list.
Triple-click the last bulleted or numbered item to select the entire line of text. (There's a hidden character at the end of the line that you need to select. Dragging your mouse to select the text doesn't always capture that hidden character.)
With the entire line of text selected, reset the font size or color for this line of text to match the rest of your list.
Issue resolved. Thank you Michael M. If you want the base layer to show while you're editing the layer you just created, click on the visibility icon (eye icon) on the bottom right next to the base layer's label.

Mel, can you upload a story file with a slide that is doing this? Then we can see what might be happening.
I would check your feedback master doesn't have a black background

This is a known issue. Here's how to correct it:
Hope that helps!
I am having the same problem. I have gone through a number of posts but unfortunately I haven't been able to resolve my issue.
I am working off my hard drive and attached is a copy of the file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John
By same problem I mean in creating a new slide layer, I get a completely opaque black screen that prevents me from seeing my base layer.
