Adjusting variables from slide layers

I am building a jeopardy module and I am trying to keep count using a variable. I have displayed the variable on the main jeopardy page. I used the built in templates for each of the questions. What I would like to do is adjust the score variable each time a question is answered correctly. To do this I tried to adjust the variable when the user clicks continue on the correct feedback slide layer but the variable is not adjusting. I did a test and adjusted the variable from a random button inserted on a question slide and it adjusted just fine. So it seems to be the fact that the trigger is on a slide layer. Am I doing something wrong or can variables not be adjusted from slide layers?
