You can't assign a variable to the slide's base layer name as far as I'm aware. You can however, assign the value of a quiz choice to another variable using triggers, in two ways. a) Use variables for each quiz choice and assign the value of the selected choice to another variable using triggers, OR b) Use triggers to manually assign text to a var.
Yes, I'd agree with Alexandros here, there isn't a way to assign the variable to read the slide base layer name. Is this something you'd like to display for users on the slide or need it for other tracking purposes? You may want to share a bit more about what you're looking to set up so that the community could share other ideas here with you.
Close captioning and tracking is the primary usage. For quizzes I would like to minimize the chances of typos in the quiz choices by entering the text only once.
You would probably need to just make a bunch of variables (essentially like constants, I suppose) and then use assign variable to other variable to achieve this, as, Storyline can't grab data like the name of base layers and assign them to a variable, much is the pity!
Hopefully you'll be able to use a set up such as Midi recommended, but I wanted to share that you're also welcome to share your thoughts in a feature request here in terms of accessing other Storyline elements as variables.
