All Video when published on web is upside down

May 17, 2016

I have published three different storyline's on Articulate.  When I go into the web based link everything works just fine until it shows the video's.  They are all upside down or sideways.  I know when they upload into Articulate I have to turn them ride side up.  What I do is put a shape in front of the video and then bring it behind the video.  Then I group both together and then turn it where it shows the video right side up.  Am I doing something wrong?  Is there another way to edit the video?  This was not a problem until I did the new update on Articulate.

Hi Jessica,

I do see that this was an issue we've reported to our QA team previously in regards to MOV files.

As you mentioned, you'll want to group the video with another object (for example, a shape behind the video; the other object can be smaller than the video so it's hidden behind it), then rotate the grouped object 90°. It won't look rotated in Storyline, but it will be rotated correctly when you preview/publish.

Hope that helps in the meantime, and we'll keep you posted as to any other updates.

Thanks Ashley.  Actually I did do that put a shape behind it and rotated it grouped together with the video.  when I play my presentation in Articulate it is facing the correct way but when I publish it web based the video's are upside down.  I even tried locking the grouping to see if that helps but so far it has not.

Hi Jessica,

Were they MOV files or another type? Are you viewing the web published output locally or have you uploaded to a server? If you've got a sample .story file with the video I'm happy to take a look. By new update, I assume you mean Update 8 of Storyline 2? You can confirm by going to the Help tab and clicking About Articulate Storyline and you'll see the "release notes here in regards to fixed bugs.

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for sharing a copy of your .story file. I took a look and saw in preview it was showing correctly and when I published and uploaded to my Articulate Online account. You can view the course here and I viewed this in Chrome (you'll see I turned on the player menu, just to make it easier to jump around). Do you want to take a look at that one and let me know how it appears for you? If you were previously tested the content on your local output or linked within your network instead of in a web server or LMS that could explain why things were not working correctly, as viewing the published content outside the intended environment is known to cause odd behavior.

Hi All,

I am experiencing the same issue as Jessica--how was this resolved?  I have a .MOV file in one of my courses and am trying to publish to HTML.  When I publish locally and test it plays correctly in Chrome with sound, but upside down in IE with sound.  When IT loads the video to the server it plays upside down without sound.

I did group a shape with the video in the .story file and it plays fine in preview and in our LMS.  I have since ungrouped and deleted the shape, but am experiencing the same results in Chrome and IE when I test.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as we are planning to create more courses and include video files.

Hi Alyssa,

Thanks so much for investigating.  I see that the video is now playing as it should in the links you sent me in both Chrome and IE.  Any thoughts on why it would be playing upside down without sound on our web server?  The IT team is using the published HTML files that I am sending them so we are not sure what might be causing the problem on that platform.

Thanks for the update! So glad to hear the videos played correctly for you. A few thoughts as to why it may be playing upside down without sound on your web server:

  1. Are you publishing locally?
  2. Are you on the latest update of Storyline 2 (Update 11)?

Also, you might want to take a look at the MIME types associated with the server

I have been having a similar problem with .mp4 video files.

I have about 20 very short videos (most are 0:30 - 2:00) in open project.

Most upload and play into the Storyline 2 slide as intended, but some come in upside down.

I have used the "group the video with an object and rotate the group" workaround. That works for the final product that I test viewed in Scorm Cloud, and it works when I view the final product in our LMS.

And all of my project files - the Storyline 2 file, the PPT file, the mp4 videos - are in one folder, on my local drive.

However, some users (students) are indicating that the videos are upside down when they launch the eLearning module.

Is this an issue with the type of browser they are using? Is Chrome the recommended browser? One student reports being a Mac user, accessing the module via Safari browser, and seeing upside-down videos

Do we have to identify that our students use a specific browser to access the modules I create in Storyline2?

If yes, which one?

Alyssa Gomez

Hey, Bruce. Strange that only a few students are seeing the videos upside down. If the content is published with HTML5, you'll want to specify that your students use one of these supported browsers:

  • Windows: Chrome (latest version) on Windows or
  • Mac: Safari 7 or later or Chrome (latest version)

We'd be happy to test your file in a few different environments to nail down why this could be happening. You can send your file to us here, and we'll take a closer look.

Hello

I am getting the same problem with video. It's fine when building and previewing if I stick it in a shape but not once I have published. We use Amazon web services to publish.

My modules are used mainly by field based staff so they open the module from a link with brings up the Articulate player on their phones - the videos are the wrong way round on here too.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Suz

Hi Suz,

I took a look at Bruce's case and my colleague Eloisa was able to fix a video using the grouped object and rotation.

Is that the workaround you're trying, and it's not working? What version of Storyline are you using? Are you seeing this only in the HTML5 output or the Articulate Mobile player?

Do you have a sample slide and video you can share with us here?
