There is a solution for you but not with a standard feature of the player of Storyline.
You would need to maximise the power of master slides in order to get the system to work. Here is a possible way to get the result you are looking:
Here are the feature of Storyline you will need in order to complete the steps:
Master slides
Shapes
States
Triggers
NOTE: All these actions are carried out in the Master Slide view on the Master slide Parent!
1. Prepare your elements in your project on the Master Slide Parent
Add a rectangle shape on the parent of your master slides. (the parent is the slide that 'pops-out' to the left in the list of slides. Any elemnets on this slide will be carried over to the other slides in the set). This rectangle will actually be your backgroundcolour for your project. Don't forget to move the rectangle to the back of your slide.
Add as many custom states as you have colours. Note that if you use the NORMAL state for a colour (like in my project) you need X-1 states for your colours. In my project I have 4 colours (white/pink/black/blue). Make sure to label your states so you can find them faster in the trigger wizard later.
Add as many 'buttons' (in my case circular shapes) to your master slide parent as you have colours (again, I use 4 shapes because I have 4 colours).
2. Create your triggers on the master slide
Create for each button a trigger that changes the state of the rectangular shape on the master slide parent.
I added a project file so you can check out my solution.
