Alt text for symbols
Aug 19, 2016
In a course I'm using the information symbol (i with a circle around it) as a trigger to display definitions. I would like to add alt text to alert people using screen readers that this symbol will open definitions. But because this is not an image, but instead is symbol inserted as a text character, I can't seem to find a way add alt text. I want to avoid using graphics because the screen reader would see that as a separate layer rather than recognizing in the text.
The simple question is: How to I apply Alt Text to a single text character?

I should add these are triggers that make change layer status from hidden to normal rather than a hyperlink to a different file or site.
Hi, Bruce -- Thanks for reaching out with your question! Unfortunately, I am not aware of a method to suggest for applying Alt text to a single character, but perhaps others will have some alternatives to offer for what you are hoping to achieve.
Hi, Bruce -- I did want to mention that I also posed your question to a few of my colleagues and an idea was shared that you might want to consider. Please see the attached file, and although it would be necessary to use extra tabs to go from one text box to another, it would let the learner know that there is a definition that they can view. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the idea. I'd prefer to keep user tabs to a minimum so the flow of the information is steady.
Since I can't put an alt tag on a text charater, I included in the instructions at the start of the course that the information symbol links to definitions.
Makes sense Bruce. Thanks for popping in to share an update.
