Alt Text -- What does the screen reader read?

May 23, 2019

Hi all,

I participated in a webinar several months back on making courses accessible. Part of the discussion was that if you don't add alt text to an object in Storyline 360 it will be read as it is seen in the timeline. I asked the question and they clarified this mean if the Shape in the Tab Order lightbox says "Text Box 'Respond in your journal.'" that this information would be read by the screen reader without any alt text added to the right of it.

Is there anyone that can clarify if this information is true or is the text "Respond in your journal." needed in the Alternate Text column in order for a screen reader to read this information properly?

Thanks,

Kayla

Hi Kayla,

I believe what you describe is true. However, hearing "textbox" before every textbox is read can be very noisy. I would recommend you place "Respond in your journal." in the alt text. If there is text in the alt text, that text overrides the timeline text.

Wow, that's a lot of "text" words" in one sentence!

Cheers,

Julie
