Alternatives to YouTube/Vimeo?

Jul 09, 2015

Hi All

Following the problems with Google disabling embedded YouTube videos we've recently switched to Vimeo- which looks great and has a much nicer feel to it. However I'm now encountering problems with controls linking Vimeo and Storyline together.

E.g. if I set a trigger saying "Play media 'Online Video 1- Web Video 1", when timeline starts/when user clicks button 1" doesn't do anything. The Vimeo object embeds just fine but the triggers don't actually do anything- I have to click the video to begin. Asides from inserting the video itself nothing else seems to work.

Has anyone else encountered a problem like this? If so was there a workaround or does anyone know of any other sites that would allow me to embed with full video controls from within Storyline? I've tried vidme, tinypic, veoh and sendvid but I've not had any success so far. Many thanks!

Hi Paul,

Are you inserting them as web objects or adding it using the embed code and the "insert video from website" option? Web objects won't be able to be controlled with a trigger. Also it looks like you've tried to set up two "when events" for this if you've inserted it from the website?  If you're using the video controls that are a part of the video player itself or the ones you can add in Storyline - it's no longer associated with the slide timeline, so triggering elements based on timeline events may be problematic.

If you're still having difficulty, it may help to share a copy of the set up you have so that folks could take a look at what's happening in your .story file.

Hi Ashley

Many thanks for your response and apologies for the delay- I've been adding the videos through the 'insert video from website' option using embed codes from youtube/vimeo and then creating a button/trigger that will allow me control over it.

I've attached an example of what I mean- the first slide was build in SL1 and does everything I need it to with Youtube. The second slide has the same setup for controls with Vimeo and doesn't do anything. I guess what I'm after is finding out are there any other sites out there which will allow me to replicate what I have in slide 1 (or is there any plans to develop this so it will work with Vimeo?)

Many thanks!

Hi Paul,

Thanks for sharing your .story file here and letting us take  a look. I remember a similar thread/user who was having difficulty controlling Vimeo videos with triggers and it seems to be how Vimeo videos are set up. If you're able to download them and insert directly vs. using the embed code that should resolve the issues. Also, please be aware that YouTube made some changes to their API code that are impacting how new videos can be inserted. You can read a bit more about that here.

Paul,

You should be able to do everything you need to do, if you use Vimeo's javascript API: https://developer.vimeo.com/player/js-api

I had a similar issue with the Wistia video service recently, and got it working very well within Storyline by using the Wistia API. Here's the thread that contains my working js code for Wistia: https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/detecting-end-of-wistia-video-with-javascript

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Leslie - Yep I had a look at Mike's solution BUT I have no idea how to alter the Vimeo code despite it all being on the developer.vimeo.com page. I could add the api=1 to turn the API on but that is as far a my knowledge takes me ..... :(

Is there anyone out there that can share the appropriate vimeo related code to make the video play when the timeline starts without the learner having to click the vimeo play button?

thanks all
