it looks like you just applied the animation to the character. I tried that and don't seem to have the option to apply it directly. The animation tab is greyed out.
I wonder if it has to do with cutting and pasting the character from another slide rather than inserting it directly... I'll play around and check back in.
here is a quick Peek video how it's done. yes you apply the animation to the character in normal state, create a new state, delete that object and copy the original state (with animation) into that state, then change to the pose you want...long winded but it works.
