On my current project, when I add a variable reference inside a text box on a layer or slide, it stops the preview from running. The preview either just stops when it reaches the slide or layer with the reference and shows a blank preview screen with scroll bar , or I get a greyed out screen over the preview with the 3 dots timer. When I delete the reference from the project, it all starts working. If I add another it all stops again!
Sounds like something is corrupted. The best process to troubleshoot that is to start a new project. Import one slide at a time and test its functioning, until you find the one that breaks things.
