Any screen recording pros? Need help -- having issues in both IE 11 and Chrome

Jun 25, 2015

Hello - I'd really appreciate some assistance from anyone who has worked with app simulations / screen recordings. I've done this extensively in Captivate, but only for a year or so in Storyline. My goal is to record several PeopleSoft transactions (in separate courses) and insert the recordings as individual slides, so they can be edited. I've completed two courses, but the steps I have to take are absolutely insane.

Here's the problem... every recommendation I've read says Google Chrome does not send enough information for screencasts, and to use Internet Explorer. Well when I use IE, nothing records at all except the first step/slide. I have tried to record different apps, and none of them work. If I launch PeopleSoft in Chrome and do the recording, it records all steps, but the screen recording objects on the timeline are placed incorrectly and the correct screen background is rarely displayed at the correct time. I have to go into each slide and either hide the recording completely (losing the animation and sound that normally plays during typing actions), or drag it to the very end of the timeline. Otherwise, for example, the background from slide 10 will be displayed on slide 12 during playback, even though slide 10 correctly displays in the edit window.

This is driving me nuts. I'm having to record in Chrome and then do so much needless editing, and still not get the results I want. Does anyone know (a) why recording in IE11 is not working, and/or (b) why recording in Chrome doesn't keep screen backgrounds where they are supposed to be? I'm at a loss and in a hurry. Thank you.

Hi Cory,

Have you tried to record something besides PeopleSoft? I know a few users have mentioned specific applications that don't behave while during recording which is also dependant on the browser as you're seeing. If you're unable to capture anything while recording in IE11, then it sounds like something may be off within Storyline or your install of it. To check, I'd want to first confirm that you're working on local project files as described here and then I'd suggest going through the repair steps documented here.

Let us know how things are behaving after that.
