Any suggestions on getting my links to work?

Nov 08, 2012

None of my links work when published. Resources don't open (these are linked to documents in the intranet). I linked You Tube videos via both web objects and buttons (with triggers - jump to URL/file). All worked perfectly when tested during development.

  1. I tried publishing to both Web and LMS - still nothing
  2. I even reset the slide background by removing the imported image - nada.

Details:

  • Created from scratch in Storyline - no Ppt import - only standard features used
  • Windows 7
  • Not working in either Google Chrome or IE(v9)
  • slides are named using text only - no puncutation

Please tell me it is something very basic.

Thanks...Ty

Hi Tyrone. Welcome to E-Learning Heroes!

Have you checked to make sure that Google Chrome and IE9 are allowing pop-ups? If these are disabled, or being blocked, it may be why the content isn't opening.

Do the file names have any spaces or underscores? If so, you can try renaming them so they don't contain spaces or underscores. This may help with opening the files.

Also, what type of documents are you trying to link to? Are these PDF files?

Thanks Christine

Yes, both PDF files had spaces in the file name. Fixed now and appears to have resolved that aspect.

I knew about the pop-up blocker as this is also a problem with our LMS.

However, still no luck with YouTube videos. I even renamed them using TinyURL. Tested the published version in a sanitised environment - free from the company's IT security - still no good. Surely Storyline can link to YouTube.

Any other suggestions?

Good morning Tyrone!

That's great, I'm happy to hear the PDFs are working for you now.

On the Youtube videos, here's some information:

There are two ways to add a YouTube video to Storyline:

   *  Insert > Video > Video from Website

   *  Insert > Web Object

Each method has its unique benefits.  Please see this article for more information.

Let me know how it works out!

Hi Christine

Still not functioning as required. I inserted the embed code following the Insert > Video > Video from Website approach. Looked perfect in the preview which seems to indicate that I did it all correctly. However the published version simply freezes. It will not even open a slide that has embedded video. Tested on IE9, Firefox and Google Chrome; Adobe Flash Player 11 installed; tried it inside and outside our company's network. I even approached our IT team who explored the code which is a foreign language to me.

The preview looks so good I will be extremely disappointed if I can't sort out this bug. Launching my videos separately from within the LMS course is an option, but a very poor one.

Now desperate...

Good morning Tyrone,

I'm very sorry to hear this is still not working for you. With YouTube, I've had the most luck inserting them as a web object. You might want to try that, if you haven't already.

If that method isn't working for you, would you mind submitting a support case with our tech team? They'll be able to take a closer look at the issue. Please attach your .story file to the case, if possible.

Also, if you do open a case, please share the case number with me (either by responding to this post or in a private message). I'll monitor the progress of the case.
