Any way to prevent the Enter key from submitting a text entry interaction? Just want a line break...

Mar 05, 2016

I am developing a course with a text entry interaction and I'd like the learners to be able to hit Enter to create a line break if they want to. The way it works now is it submits the interaction. Is there a variable or something I can set up to tell Storyline NOT to submit the interaction when the Enter key is pressed? Thank you!!!!!

Hi, Cindy -- Thanks so much for reaching out with your question!

Here's how Articulate Storyline handles the Enter key in data-entry fields:

*  If the data-entry field is tall enough to accommodate more than one line of text, the Enter key will add a line break (return), so the learner can start a new paragraph.
*  If the data-entry field is only tall enough for a single line of text, the Enter key will assign the learner's response to the text field's variable. In other words, it'll submit the learner's response.

Thanks for your reply, but it seems that no matter the size of my boxes Storyline submits the interaction when I hit Enter. I hope this gets changed in a future release. There are definitely times when I'd want to have more than one text box in an interaction, and wouldn't want it accidentally submitted if the user hits Enter. I know this is pretty standard UI behavior, but there should at least be an option to turn it off.
