Applying slide master layouts to quizzes
Sep 09, 2012
This is something that's been vexing me for some time. I'd like to have my quizzes (the original display, and not the feedback) appear in the same layout as one of my slides in the master, but I can't find a way to apply that.
When I create a quiz slide, it appears in a full-size layout. On applying a slide master layout, the questions are crammed in together, and it takes a bit of work to drag everything around to fit within the placeholder, then change the font sizes.
Is there another way to do this? I'm probably missing something simple, but I've tried many methods and have searched a lot in the forums and tutorials, with no luck.
Here's the way the quiz displays initially:
...and here's how it looks when I apply a slide layout (the only options I have are from my regular slide master):
Any thoughts on how I can get the layout to work properly? Is there a quiz slide master?
Thanks for all of your help!
Allan
P.S. I'm within a day or two of finalizing my first course, and am thrilled with how well Storyline works.

Hi Allan,
Take a look at this thread here. It's for quizmaker, but the overall process is similar.
Always Happy to Help,
Adrian
Hi Allan,
One last one. This is a tutorial for Storyline.
Adrian
Sorry for the delay in getting back on this, Adrian. Thanks so much for posting these.
I've spent some time going through each of the tutorials, and they're describing the process I'm using. I'd watched the second tutorial much earlier in the game.
I'm still having a problem getting the layout I've developed to work, with the same issue that shows up in the screenshots above. When I apply the layout it to my quiz slide, things aren't in the right place.
I thought that perhaps I might need to label the placeholders in the layout so that it knows what goes where (question and answers). Looking at the options, I only see Content / Text / Picture / Illustrated Character / Movie / Flash / Web Object. I don't see an option for designating a placeholder as a quiz question or answer placeholder.
I'm sure there's an easy way to format quizzes, but I just can't find it. Do you or any others have some pointers on what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks again!
Allan
My colleague and I are experiencing a similar difficulty. We would like to be able to create a layout under our master slide design that will be applied to quiz and interactions. Currently if we add a templated interaction the project applies the master slide that goes with that template. It would be nice not to have to redesign that master slide to match it to out existing.
Any help on this would be great!
Amy
I have had a similar problem
when I updated my master slide layout to my quiz slides all of my quiz answers jumped about on the quiz slides.
the headers and questions were fine?
did anyone find a solution?
Hi Sharon, welcome to Heroes!
Would you mind letting us take a closer look at your project? Please submit a case, including your .story file, using this link so our support team can assist you further.
Thanks!
Sharon,
I have seen what you are reporting as well. As best as I can figure out it is due to the length of the box where the answers are varying in length between question types. Because of this even when you shorten the box and move it down, it will still default to the way the specific question is formatted.
I could be wrong, but that is what I have been led to think through trial and error.
Amy
I have the same kind of problems, see my screenshots below.
The weirdest thing is that objects move again when you reapply the layout !

Hi Pierre,
I've seen this behavior before, when reapplying the layout a second time, it seems to shuffle the elements around. It's been reported to our QA team, but I don't have a time frame to offer at this point.
Hi Ashley,
Actually, it's closer to what I expected the second time !
But do you have a clue why final layout is do differrent ? Did I make something wrong ?
Below : layout and slide when applied twice :
Hi Pierre,
The issue of applying a slide layout to a slide twice, is what was reported to our QA team, and that it shuffles elements around. If you'd like us to take a look at your file and confirm the same thing is happening, please feel free to share it here with us.
Thanks Ashley, I just sent my file to support team.
Thanks Pierre, if you'd like to share your case number with me I'm happy to follow along.
Hi Pierre,
I took a look into your case today, and see that Regil confirmed that your file had become corrupted and shared the following reminders:
When creating, editing, or publishing a Storyline project, we recommend working from your local hard drive (typically your C: drive). Working from a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes you've made to your project, and loss of resources.
May I know if you are able to reproduce the problem from scratch? If you can then please send us a screencast. Meanwhile please not use this layout anymore.
Hello,
I'm back to my project. I've redone the layout from scratch and... it's nearly quite as bad as it was !
- I stil have to apply the layout twice to get the desired layout (font size, color, and positions are OK)
- Answers are shuffled from the first time the layout is applied
Don't know what to do... and I have to make different flavours of this layout (different colors) so I'd prefer it to be clean in the first place.
Any idea ?
Thanks.
PJ
Hi Pierre,
There is a known issue that has been reported to our QA team where if you apply a layout to slide, and then choose to apply a new layout it shuffles around the text within the placeholders, but from your images I can't see if that's exactly what's happening in your file as it looks like in the first image the top text is overlapping? Also, this example doesn't show that the answers are shuffling either.
Can you use the link within the file Regil gave you to share a screencast with us of what's happening?
Sorry, there's no Java on our machines so screencast won't work.
I can upload animated GIF or whatever file you want thought...
Hi Pierre,
You could use something like Replay to record your screen? It's free for Storyline users.
Hi Ashley,
I just did a Replay screencast and submitted files !
Thanks Pierre, and I'll check in on your case today and see if Regil has taken a look.
Hi Pierre,
I looked into the file you sent, and see that Regil submitted this to our Quality Assurance team, although I don't have a time frame to offer on a fix.
I nearly forgot about this problem until I had to make a new theme (from scratch) and the problem is still the same, even with update 6 :
From left to right :
- master slide
- layout applied once : slide title and question swapped and misplaced, answers not aligned
- layout applied twice : better but still not what I want !
Templates and themes are close to useless with such bugs.
Hi Pierre,
I see that this issue with the slide master placeholders shuffling or being swapped is still with our QA team, and I don't have an update to offer at this time. I'll be sure to post any additional information here when it becomes available.
Dear All,
Has there been an update on this issue? Has it been resolved with Storyline 2?
Hi Patrick,
I just tested this in SL2, and I don't see the shuffle occurring within elements of the slide master so it does not appear to be an issue within SL2, although the issue within SL1 is still with our QA team.
If you run into issues within SL2, please feel free to let us know and we'll want to take a look at your .story file and what steps you went through to see this behavior.
