Articulate is not sending scores to Canvas gradebook

Oct 05, 2020

At my institution, we created a number of tutorials to be uploaded into Canvas LMS classes with the hopes that once completed, grades would be automatically sent to the Canvas LMS gradebook.  With Articulate Storyline 2, this would largely work well even though there were occassionally times in which a zero grade would be entered rather than the actual score (and it was impossible to replace this zero).   However, we recently upgraded to Storyline 360, and now every grade is entered into Canvas as a zero.  We have tried everything in the LMS settings.  We have tried SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, Tin Can (wouldn't even open in this one) and a variety of Passed/Incomplete, Passed/Failed, Completed/Incomplete, and Completed/Failed settings.  For the most part it is all zeroes across the board.  No idea what to do and am very much regretting my purchase of Storyline, which apparantly no longer seems to work with Canvas.  Is there any solution at all to this issue?

Hello Sean and welcome to E-Learning Heroes 😊

Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing with your Storyline 360 courses in Canvas.

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening and test in another LMS environment to see if I can replicate the behavior. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Up until last week my SCORM files were working fine with Canvas. on the 10th October Canvas pushed out an update to their SCORM LTI and it seems to have broken reporting. I don't think the issue is Storyline as my SCORM's have been on Canvas for months without being touched - the only recent changes have all been with Canvas updates.

Not helpful I know but probably worth raising a ticket with Canvas support to see if they can get a fix in place.

I am having the same issue with a third-party, a university that has been having issues uploading multiple Stories into their Canvas LMS. @lesliemckerchie - have you resolved the issue? We would like clarification on the steps necessary. We have tried everything that the original poster tried, including modifying the pass/fail options and sending the zipped file in different formats with no luck. Per the frustrated user that is attempting to upload the Stories into the Canvas LMS, she continuously gets the “Course ID cannot contain spaces” error.

Is there any solution to this issue?

Hi everyone - I am not responding with a solution (sigh) but to let you know that a group of us here in the community raised this issue last year with Canvas as well as our IT people - The solution that seemed to work for some is to actually publish to the SCORM cloud which of course many of us could not do bc of FERPA and because of other workload related issues -

The only time I have seen Storyline work on Canvas is when our HR team publishes a course where in the end we get to print a PDF certificate which is cool but does not really apply in our courses

Many of us reverted to entering grades manually - however this year I decided not to use the test or quiz option which I love in Storyline bc it was an absolute nightmare to manage with 4 different preps and 120 students - I just use Storyline for my lectures and to make them interactive - then I create a canvas quiz which beats the purpose but for now it's either that or give up on Storyline which I rather give up on Canvas (sadly I don't have the LMS choice at my institution)

All in all, I stick to my comment last year that Canvas is not interested in resolving this glitch bc when you think about it if my institution bought Rise instead of Canvas we wouldn't be having this conversation - so it suits Canvas that we all have this issue...

So I really hope Articulate can fix this (although not their problem) - just so that we can fully engage with these apps - because I suspect Canvas will not bridge this gap - a HUGE dumb mistake  (on Canvas part) bc if I were Articulate I would really enjoy making them obsolete =)

Viva la revolucion :)

Hello,

Leslie has been helping me out with this issue and I think we were able to find a resolution.  For starters, I needed to upgrade my Articulate 360 Storyline version to: 3.44.23192.0  To do so, I simply clicked the Upgrade option under my Articulate 360 menu that pops up.  It said Upgrade Available upon it.  I don't know if this was a new upgrade, but I don't think I saw it when we initially got Articulate 360.

After doing so, when I went to my Results slide a few additional buttons popped up under the Design Tab (Result Tools).  Namely a button that says "Final Assessment", "LMS Tracking", and "Quiz Settings Options" (see image below).  The particular results slide I was using combines three previous results slides to deliver a Final Results Slide score.  I had to go under Quiz Settings and check all the results slides I wanted to count. (Somehow these became disconnected though when I moved from Storyline2 to 360, even though before I did the upgrade to 3.44.23192.0 it seemed as if these results slides were feeding into this and it displayed the score correctly).  Some additional settings that I also had included were the result slide being set to Final Assessment, Passed/Incomplete, and SCORM 2004 (4th Edition).  Here was some instructions that seemed relevent...  https://articulate.com/support/article/Storyline-360-More-Quizzing-and-Tracking-Options  (I don't know if some of these options were new, but the post was last updated Sept. 29, 2020).  Anyways, this seemed to clear up the issue for me.

Additionally, we have had a lingering issue with Storyline where if someone started a quiz, it would automatically start them with a zero grade, which would be changed if a student completed the quiz in one sitting but couldn't be altered if a student stopped the quiz and came back at a later date.  In the initial testing that I have done, this issue seems to have also cleared up this fix.  I have been trying to fix this particular issue for years, so special thanks to Leslie for her help and assistance.

Thanks and all the best,

Sean
