Articulate Storyline 1 - Next button not appearing on slide with web object (Storyline 1)
Feb 10, 2015
Hello Community!
I was wondering if anyone else had an issue like this--
I have a large series of training modules that were built from converted PPT files, updated with a number of interactive elements. One of the elements is a .swf file that had to be loaded as a web object (for technical reasons). Anyhow, most users are not having any trouble with this particular page, but a handful of them are experiencing this bizarre issue where the Next and Previous buttons are gone.
I've double-checked the settings and both the previous and next toggles are definitely enabled in the project file. There are no restrictions on having to interact with the flash file/web object before moving on.
Does anyone here have any suggestions? Unfortunately, I can't provide the file, as it contains sensitive company information, but I can provide screenshots and any additional details.
Thanks!
Adam

Hello Adam,
You may want to look at the information here about player elements appearing behind a web object. If you would like to share the file privately for us to take a look, you can upload it privately here.
Hello Emily,
Thank you for responding so quickly!
The link you sent me is interesting and leads me to believe that it could be at least part of the issue. My only question is--would that account for most users having no issue with the same web object? (The article didn't specify if this was browser-related)
Whether or not it's coincidence, both users who had this issue that I spoke to were using IE 11.
Thanks again!
Adam
Hello Adam,
I do not believe the issue in the link above is browser based. But it also could be a security issue within the browser. If you continue to have reports with just IE11, checking those settings may be worth looking in to.
Hi Adam/Emily, I've had the same issue with some of our users - a web object on the slide (in this case a Youtube vid as web object) is somehow causing the navigation to disappear. it has been difficult to diagnose as we can't recreate the problem.
I'll upload privately to you Emily.
Thanks,
Roddy
Also, should have mentioned it's the same for us - an IE11 issue.
Hello Roddy,
Have you looked at the link I shared above? The elements appearing behind a web object is a known issue .I will keep an eye out for your file.
Hello Roddy, Emily,
I think I may have found the culprit in my instance, but am not sure how Roddy would address this.
In the case where I had an issue, it appears that IE 11 is was using the dimensions specified by the HTML launch file instead of the web object area defined within Storyline. In other words, it was loading an object so large, that it covered up all the controls for the end user.
My solution was to set the HTML-designated dimensions much lower, and this seems to have solved the problem in my case. I'm not sure if you can designate a smaller size as a link to a youtube video.
Adam
Thanks for the update Adam.
Hi both,
That's a big help Adam, and makes sense to me - i did wonder how the web object would obscure something that wasn't on the slide itself. Thanks for this - if you could you let me know where exactly the HTML you tweaked can be found I'd really appreciate it! Not sure if I'll be able to designate a smaller size either but I'll have a play around with it.
Emily, I've uploaded the .story file to you.
Thanks again,
Roddy
Hello Roddy,
In my case, I had an accessible Flash file that is launched by an associated html file. The html file designates the specific dimensions that govern how the swf file should be displayed once loaded. This is where I tweaked the incoming size parameters. Not sure you can do this with a youtube video. At least not easily.
If you or your organization own the video, it might be easier to embed it into the project. Another option that might work would be to create an intermediary html page that dynamically loads your youtube link into a size-restricted DIV. So in this scenario, you'd be loading a webpage you created which loads the youtube page dynamically.
I think most YouTube videos are now layout responsive, so this might achieve the effect you're after, albeit in a backwards way.
Adam
Thanks Adam, i'll definitely give these a go. Yes we do own the videos, so an embed or using "insert video from website" might work also. There were advantages to having them in as a web object but that might have to be a sacrifice we'll have to make.
Thanks again for your help, and to Emily also.
Roddy
Good luck with the project Roddy, and I will keep posted if the web object issue gets resolved.
