Articulate Storyline course not launching consistently published to Totara
Nov 24, 2015
In brief the main problems experienced are:
- some testers could work through the module without any problems
- for about half the testers the file is not launching / opening properly i.e. it freezes at the start-up screen (see image below)
- the progress bar in Totara (LMS) showed green = ‘completed’ for some testers and orange = ‘in progress’ for others even though they completed the required number of slides including the quiz.
What we have done so far to try resolve the issues:
- Reduced the file size
-
split the module into 2 separate modules which are now 10 - 11MB in size
Published to LMS with the following settings:
-
Published as Scorm 1.2
-
Track using number of slides viewed (min 60/106 slides - shortest possible route to take through branching scenarios)
-
Report status to LMS (Completed/Incomplete)
The image below shows the file documents that we zipped and uploaded to Totara.
-
Un-checked the option ‘launch in new window’
-
We published the files to SCORM Cloud and thus far feedback has produced different problems i.e.
-
We read this article:
https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/storyline-opens-as-blank-in-ie8
and tried using SCORM Cloud instead of Totara - the result presents a different problem i.e. the course loaded properly but before completion a screen popped up saying the tester had completed it.
-
We are also trying to find out what version of windows or browsers the testers are using.
Any advice welcome!

Hi, Lee -- So sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing and thank you for sharing the troubleshooting steps your have already tried to address the issue. I'm glad to hear that you have already tried testing in the SCORM Cloud, and I thought I might share the following resources to see if any of the ideas suggested helps you find improvement:
Troubleshooting LMS issues
How to Troubleshoot Your LMS with SCORM Cloud
If you would like to share your file, I would be happy to do some testing on my end. And also, just so you have it for your reference when you find out what version of Windows or browsers the testers are using, here is our SL2 System Requirements sheet. :)
Hi Christie,
We have experienced the same issue with Lee's in opening a e-learning module authoring in SL 2.0. Is it possible that I can share my file for your testing? We are in an international development organization and one entire country have the trouble in opening the module. Your support would be very much appreciated!
Thank you!
Thanks for that, I will have a look.
We are still using SL1
Please find attached storyline file.
Feedback we have from someone that we might have to rebuild again which is something I do not want to do.
We managed to get it from 26mb down to 12mb with changing all .png images to .jpg
Right now we are waiting for testers to try the module which I split into 3 sections to make them smaller. But if I can get it to work as one whole module that would be ideal.
Thank you for your response.
Lee
Hi Lee! I took a look and published your course, but I did not experience any of the issues that you mentioned.

Did you get information about the browsers and viewing as Christie shared above?
Hi Heejung!
If you need us to take a look, you are welcome to share your .story file.
Hi Leslie,
We went out to a branch last week Friday and determined that it was the browser they were using. They were using IE8, but we tried IE11 and Chrome and it worked with no hassles.
Ah. Thanks for the update Lee. I would still expect the content to work in the browser, provided you were meeting all of the other viewing requirements shown here.
Hi Leslie,
Just unsure if I share our course .story file here, would it be accessible to the public?
If so, is there any other way that I can share the file with you? I am not sure if I am allowed to open this file to the public...Please and thanks,
Heejung
Hi Heejung!
Yes, if you share your files in the forum it will be public.
