Assessment Streams - 2 Options for Assessment in One Course

May 07, 2019

I'm looking to create ONE course with 2 different possible assessments based on language - English and Spanish. Users will need to get a score based on either assessment language stream or 'branch' that they choose to take. In the LMS, the scoring needs to pull from either assessment, NOT both. Has anyone done this before, and is this possible to score properly in LMS?

Thanks!

I think it's possible in what you're trying to accomplish but you'll need to wire up the solution yourself.  The amount of information needed to be recorded will give you an idea on the complexity of what you will need to do.

Here are some resources to get your arms around this:

  • The first place to get started is to read Matthew Bibby's tutorial on Capturing Storyline Variables in an LMS.
  • Next read this article from Articulate to reinforce what Matthew's tutorial covered.  It's written for Storyline 2 but still works for Storyline 3 / 360.

Now that you have some resources, here are some additional questions (and hopefully ideas!) on how to get started:

1. Do you need to record each answer your learner chooses in the LMS?

  • If yes, you'll need to create each question like in the above tutorials.  For more information on how to create individual questions without using the built-in quiz engine, see Matthew's tutorial on How Do I Add More than One Question to a Slide.

2. Do you need to pass an actual score or will 'completed' be acceptable?

  • If you just need to record the score as being 'completed' , the reference tutorials above should work without any additional steps.  If you need a score then there are a couple of more things to do:

a. Create a variable to track the score.  On each 'correct' layer, add to the score.
b. Read this answer from Joey Buys on how to set the final score to be reported

The most difficult part may be thinking through how to use the Result slide.  In Storyline, you can only report 1 Result slide.  Thinking out loud here, this is what I would try:

1. Before taking the assessment, ask the user which language they'll be taking the assessment in.  Capture this in a variable.

2. Create a new scene for the assessment.

3. On each slide check the language variable (at the start of the timeline) and then show the appropriate layer for the language.

4. The next slide will be the pass through slide grabbing the variable you recorded the answer (if you need to record each answer).

5. The pass through slide then goes to the next question - you'll then repeat this until you get to the last question and it's pass through slide.

6. The last pass through slide will then go to the Results slide.

If you don't need to record the answers the learner has made, simply track the # of correct answers with a variable.  You can then decide to either go with

  • "if they got x amount of questions correct" then the course records as completed  (use Track using number of slides viewed)
  • A score needs to be recorded then set using Joey Buys code referenced above

Good luck - it's a bit daunting but I still think it's possible!
