assigning keystrokes and triggers

Sep 13, 2012

I've set up a page with three objects to click on and the user is taken to a different page. It works perfectly when I mouse click on each object - I am brought to the correct page. However, I have also assigned each object to open on a keystroke (space key). Problem there is, they all go to one page.

So my question is, can you have the same keystroke assigned to different objects on the same page? My page is also set up using Phil Mayor's variable example. And it works just fine when using the mouse to click on the objects.

Thanks!

Hmmmm - well that's unfortunate. I want the scene to be usable by someone using a keyboard as well as a mouse. I don't want to have to tell them use the space key to open this one, use the tab to open this one... etc. Is there a better way?

(I'm not applying multiple triggers to the same object. I have three separate objects that I want the same keystroke to open.)

Thanks!

Hi Nicole,  on click triggers should work with a key press automatically by tabbing and pressing the space bar if you have the accessiblity  option selected for an object ( ATL Text  setting).

Since this setting seems to be enabled by default for all objects, you should not have to do anything special for this to work.

I recently finished a project that had to be accessible and all my buttons where working properly when I tabbed and pressed the space bar - but installed the update that recently came out and found that after the install some of my buttons worked with the space bar and some didn't.  I reported it as a bug but was told it was just a problem with my file - but I swear I can recreate this in completely new projects.

This is what I have observed.  If you add a button and do not alter any of the states, the buttons work with the space bar. If you edit the states ( for example, add a check mark to the visited state), the button no longer works with the space bar.

I tried working around this by adding keypress triggers to these buttons but got the same result as you report. It only works for one button.

I solved my problem by removing the check marks I added to the states and  placed the checkmarkes out side of the buttons and triggered them to appear when the user clicked the button.

I would be interested in hearing what you found and how you fixed the problem.

I really still believe this is a bug that needs to be addressed.

Hi Nancy

Yes! This is happening when I alter states and add a check mark too. I'm not using buttons but my own image as the object the user clicks on. My work around was to make the image invisible and then in states I added a text box that had the trigger and was visible. It works this way.

I'm having another issue now... I also assign the right and left arrows for navigation but do not do it on the master because too many slides have particular navigation. So I assign it to each slide manually. BUT on slides that have buttons that open slide layers - when using keyboard navigation to open the layer and then close it, the slide wont go back or advance using the right and left arrow keys. Everything works fine on mouse clicks.

Humph!
