Assistance Requested - Change States with Variables

Oct 07, 2013

Folks,

I have a question regarding State Changes upon Variable Changes. I'm new to Storyline and e-Courses but really want to become an expert over time.

I have a course I'm building, one of my first so its a bit clunky and simplistic but I am continually adding more complexity and learning as I go.

Here is my problem:

I have a screen with three buttons each of which has a "Checkmark" above them. Each button enters a different layer where a Video resides (Pic1). There is a trigger on each layer that changes the state of a variable (Variable A, B & C, one for each layer) once the "Media Completes."(pic2-example layer) The Checkmark on the Base Layer is suppose to change to a state of "normal" from it's normally "hidden" state once the variable of each layer changes from False to True.

I have tried many different ways, I have even tried adding layers just to add a checkmark but nothing seems to work. I tried changing the variable to the following (Change State of Checkmark 1 to "Normal when "Variable" Changes - AND Variable is == to True). Nothing is working.

I want to add some more complexity to the course based on this functionality, once I get this seemingly simple trigger state issue figured out.

As a second question (or should I start another post). How to I add a layer to every slide without physically adding the layer to every slide. I tried to add a layer into the SlideMaster but that didn't do anything. Perhaps I did it wrong or maybe its not possible?

Thank you in Advance for any assistance you can offer

Hi Vaughan and welcome to  Heroes!

It's great to see that you're diving right in, and since you're working with a number of features I wanted to point you to a few helpful items:

This screenr from David Anderson on changing states with variables.

A tutorial on states, layers and triggers

A similar thread, with an example of the checkboxes on the buttons.

Also, in regards to your last question, you'll need to add the layer(s) to each slide, not from the master. You can duplicate a layer within a slide if you need it more than once as described at the bottom of this tutorial.

If you're able to post your .story file here and share with us, as you'll see in the other thread often community members jump in to help. Just click on the paper clip icon and find the .story file to post it here.
