Normally i just attach the PDF to the course, and when the learner is done, they can just close the window that shows the PDF file. Is there a reason you need to close the file for the learner?
If you attach the PDF via the Resources tab in the Player, it should open automatically open in a new window, and the learner can return to the course by clicking on the tab the course is in. Please see this information on Attaching Resources. Hope that helps! :)
