If you're working on a virtual machine, you'll still want to ensure you're working within the local environment as described here (article references Macs but the same rules apply for other environments where you're operating in a Virtual machine). You'll also want to make sure that the virtual machine matches the system requirements here and check that the machine can access the microphone by trying to record in another program/application. Lastly if the behavior persists after looking into all those elements, I'd look at repairing Storyline.
