Audio Timeline Not Consistent

Jun 11, 2018

I use the audio timeline when I am trimming the "silence" at the beginning and end of an audio voice over file. I have noticed that frequently one of the numbers is missing at the beginning of the file. Does anyone know why this happens? I have attached an image to illustrate what I see.

Hi there, Linda! Ah, interesting – I'd love to dig deeper. A few questions to start:

  • What version of Storyline 360 are you on? You can find out by going to Help > About Storyline
  • To clarify, do you hear any audio issues when previewing/after publishing the altered audio? Does it play as expected after cutting the silence out?
  • Are you able to share your .story file (or a slide that holds the audio)? Simply pop it into this discussion by using the Add Attachment option in your reply. I'd like run some tests.

Looking forward to lending a hand!

Katie, thank you for your response. I attached two files to this message. The first is my selection after I open the audio. The second is after I zoom the selection. I have also uploaded a copy of this course and put the link below. The slide I used when creating the attached graphics was slide 1.4 Course Objectives.

To answer your questions -

Version 3.16.15842.0

The audios play fine after the silence both before and after the silence is cut. I try to be consistent on the amount of silence at the beginning of each slide. This makes it predictable for the user. It also makes it much easier if the audio has to be re-recorded if the audio has a word that is not pronounced correctly. I find I don't have to rework the cues that way.

I appreciate any assistance you can give me.

Linda,

The missing numbers are a function of the zoom being set such that the exact time divisions don't really match what SL is able to display at that size. I suspect if you change the zoom, you can change, at least, which numbers show and which are missing.

FWIW, SL is a visual authoring tool. If you want to be exact with your audio editing, perhaps an audio editor would better serve your purpose. I suggest audacity - free, and accurate to .xxx second.
