Audio Won't Play on First Slide in Chrome
Oct 02, 2018
Greetings Folks:
When I view my elearning course in Chrome (created in Storyline 2), the audio on the first slide doesn't play. If I pause the slide and click to start again, the audio begins playing. If I let the first slide run, no music plays but when the slide advances to the next slide in the chapter (and for all subsequent slides), the sounds plays fine. A friend who uses Storyline 2 says he's also experiencing this problem. It appears to be a recent problem. I don't remember it being an issue a few months ago. I do publish all courses to web with HTML5 included in the output. Neither .mp3, .wav, nor even a video (.mp4) will play on the first slide of any course. When viewed via the Mobile Player on the iPad, all first slides play the music. This is only an issue with viewing courses on a Chrome browser. Seems as if it's a problem with a Chrome update.
Can anyone offer insight on the issue? Sure would appreciate it.

Thanks Ashley! Unfortunately the play button does not automatically appear in our instance of Chrome (and I'm using the latest version of Storyline 360). Thanks again for the advice!
Hi Chris,
It sounds like you may be seeing something a bit different than what we have reported.
With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.
Thanks for reaching out and sharing your file, Chris. I've tested and replied to your support case.
I was looking for a solution to the problem described in this forum. I just tested a file in both Chrome and Explorer and the first slide on my storyline project published on the web doesn't play audio. If I left it run to the second slide, the audio is there. If I go back to the first slide, the audio still doesn't play for that slide and then the Next button and all the player buttons just stop working. Has anyone found a similar situation and perhaps found a solution?
Hi Elizabeth!
Let's first check the version and update of Storyline that you're using. To find this detail, go to the Help tab, then About Storyline. Let me know the version and update number you see there.
If you're already on the latest update and you're still having audio issues, I'd like to test your file on my side. Simply send your file to me privately by uploading it here, and I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.
I am having an issue on the latest version of Chrome and a version of IE - when the course opens, there is no audio. The user has to click on the volume button twice in order for the audio to play. Has anyone else run into this? Hoping I can find a fix asap.
I am using the latest version of 360.
Hi Shawna,
That issue sounds a bit different than what folks have described here. I'd love to take a look and test out a copy of your project with your permission. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.
I’ll delete it when I’m done troubleshooting.
Thank you, i have sent you the files.
I had everything working fine in Storyline 2 by putting a short slide first with no audio, which auto-advances to the next. The audio on that slide would play fine. Now with Storyline 3 it doesn't work. Audio will not play on any slide upon first entry to the slide, only on replay. I've tried adding 1 or 2 seconds before the audio starts and I've tried using a player trigger to force the audio to start. No luck. I'm on Chrome 73 using HTML5 publishing options. I'm on deadline. Can anyone help?
Thanks, Shawna. I responded within your case and we can keep the conversation going there since these files are private.
Hi Brent,
Have you looked at adding a user interaction to the slide? That is one of the pieces detailed here that'll help Chrome and other modern browsers allow media to autoplay based on the new rules introduced within the last year.
Another workaround is the add silent audio to the first slide, as that would set Storyline to add the play button at course launch so that the user wouldn't need to interact with the slide beyond that for the audio to play.
Thanks Ashley -- I understand now that the culprit was the auto-advance. I like to use those sometimes with audio and video but if Chrome won't let me, I can work around it. I removed the first silent slide that auto-advanced to the audio slide and added Click Next to the other instances and all is well. I appreciate your quick response.
No problem Brent, and happy to help! The changes Chrome made to autoplay definitely through everyone for a loop - so I'm glad those changes got you back up and running!
