Auto open Storyline on a tablet

May 10, 2016

We use Storyline to display instructions for physical activities for a classroom of teenagers (13-15) by using tablets. We want to use this laptop/tablet hybrid but would like to restrict the student's use of the computer to only using the articulate app locally. We don't want them to access the rest of the computer's functions and would like the Articulate app to open automatically when the student logs into the tablet. Is this possible?

Hi, Diane -- Thanks for reaching out here! And while I am not aware of a way to auto open your course on a tablet, may I ask if you have considered the options in this article on Downloading Content for Offline Viewing? If you are concerned about students accessing the internet, perhaps your IT dept could disable internet access after the courses have initially been downloaded to the device? Hope that might work for what you have in mind!

I do know how to tell the Articulate app to download the story for offline viewing but I wish I could somehow make so when the hybrid laptop is turned on an logged into that the story I want the students to view would appear automatically. Kind of how when back in the day when you inserted a CD into the drive it would just launch automatically. We want to minimize the steps for the students to get into the eLearning but also to keep them focused. The equipment we are using is a true laptop/PC it's just that the monitor has touch capabilities. I know that I could have them launch the story.html file locally but I'd like to control the student's interaction with this equipment better. Is there a script we could run to have that specific file (story.html) launch when they login to the laptop? Or somehow to launch in the articulate app? Although that's an issue too since it's really a real laptop there's no mobile/tablet app to be launched. It's running windows 8. I hope these details can help explain what I'm trying to do. Thanks for your time on this.

regards,

Diane

Hi, Diane -- Thanks for the additional details! With respects to running a script to achieve what you have in mind, that falls outside of my wheelhouse, so hopefully someone knowledgable in that area would have some advice to share.

And as you mentioned launching the story.html file locally, yes, Articulate Storyline has an option to publish for local playback. This option is generally recommended if you need to deploy your course on a CD, DVD, or standalone computer (kiosk), as detailed here: Storyline 2: Publishing a Course for CD or Another Local Source

Hopefully, others who have attempted something similar to what you have described will also be able to chime in with some insights to assist.
