We are embedding videos using Vimeo embed code. This all works ok, but I can't get the Vimeo videos to play automatically. This means that anything that is synchronised with the slide's timeline goes out of time with the video because the video waits for the user to click on it to start it.
The dialog box for copying a Vimeo embed code has optipons, including the option to autoplay. See a quick example here, with the AutoPlay option selected.
Thanks Michael, would you have the embed code used in the example? I tried putting the autoplay in the embed code and it still didn't work. I also couldn't see the option in the Vimeo dialogue box. Thanks, David.
I am doing the same thing and clicked on the link that Michael left above but it's no longer a good link. Does anyone else have a good demo or at least the embed code for autoplaying a Vimeo? Thanks!
Ah, sorry for the confusion Theresa - but this discussion was in the Storyline section of ELH. Since you're struggling with the embed code for a Vimeo video I'd love to take a look at what you're using and I can add that to a Presenter course to share with you. Do you have code or a link to the video that you can share here?
I used to have success with the above code for autoplaying vimeo videos, but not anymore.
Until very recently, I successfully made Vimeo videos autoplay when they are embedded into Storyline by adding ?autoplay=1 after the video ID like this: (which is how I believe the file Alyssa Gomez attached above works as well):
For some reason, this has stopped working. The video appears to want to autoplay because the pause button is activated, but you have to click the pause button and then click play to make the video play.
Does anyone have any idea what might have changed that using the code above no longer works to autoplay and if there's anything else I can do?
Vimeo instructs you to click Share on your video > Show Options > Select Autoplay. Then get the embed code. That has never worked for me, but the above has… up until now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. We have several courses that pull in Vimeo videos like this on our LMS.
Are these videos on your first slide? Browsers like Chrome and Safari have started to block the auto play of media. We have some more info on this here, and depending on the version of Storyline you're using the additional support for that version may already be available to you.
HI Ashley. Thanks for the response. Videos are not on the first slide, but it does appear to be a Chrome issue. Videos autoplay in Internet Explorer. The link you shared above said the December update should fix this (as long as videos aren't on the first slide, which mine aren't). Unfortunately, my storyline 360 is up to date and it's still happening. I went ahead and created a new course just now to test from scratch. Any other suggestions?
If you don't mind sharing your file with us, we'd be happy to take a look. We can help you nail down whether this is a Storyline issue, or if it is due to a change within Vimeo.

It looks like autoplay of Vimeo vids is restricted in Chrome, see here. I don't know if the suggested workaround (initially muting the video with ?muted=1 ) would work for you.
Thanks Michael for sharing that! I know Chrome has started to block the autoplay of media on the first slide, but it's good to know with Vimeo videos it's restricted throughout.
I am having the same problem, 3 years later. Can anyone tell me how to get an embedded vimeo video to autoplay? I am looking for a workaround. Also, I can't find the autoplay controls on vimeo either.
I'm glad you're checking back with us! We've seen this only occur with Chrome, where Vimeo videos don't auto-play. Other than the workarounds listed previously in this discussion, we suggest using another browser that doesn't have these restrictions, such as FireFox or IE.
This was mentioned before. Autoplay is currently restricted in the following:
Safari version 11+ (Desktop) Chrome version 66+ (Desktop/Mobile) iOS (Safari, other mobile browsers, apps) Firefox 66+ (Desktop/Mobile)
There is no way to stop these autoplay restrictions. You can mute your video to circumvent this restriction but, it will require users to click the Unmute button instead of the Play button, which, in turn, defies the whole purpose to begin with.
Would love to see Articulate accept the challenge to work with streaming video better than an iframe solution. It's not like video is a new thing or going to go away anytime soon. :)
Thanks, I found this "autoplay=1" code very helpful. I'm curious how you figured it out as well as whether you know of a code to play just a section of a longer video.
It seems to be only on the first slide that the restriction happens. If you have an "intro" slide before the video (with video on slide 2), it should auto-play. I've just tested this on SCORM cloud, with firefox and chrome. Seemed to work.

So glad to hear you found this thread helpful, Kristin! :) Be sure to reach out if you have any further questions!
Just for reference, see attached the .story file for my example above.

Hi Theresa!
Did you see the project file Michael attached in this latest post? I've attached it here as well. It looks like it may be a Storyline 2 file.
Have a look, and let us know if that's what you had in mind!
Thanks for your reply Alyssa. I'm using Presenter '13 so I couldn't open the storyline file.

Hi Alyssa.
I've attached the story file with the embedded vimeo video that isn't autoplaying. If helpful, here is the Articulate Review version of the course: https://360.articulate.com/review/content/b7bcb443-6af4-4d37-9b95-852216c3ea4b/review .
The second slide has the video. It autoplays in Internet Explorer, but not in Google Chrome.
Thanks so much for any help you can provide!

H and thanks Lauren.
However, the browser that I use is irrelevant. The browser my clients use is what matters here.
What is the single best workaround mentioned in the thread? I am not clear on that.

Has this been solved? Am I correct to understand that no video can auto play in articulate storyline on chrome?
And just to be clear, this happens for all slides? Right?
