Automatic table of contents in drop-down list?

Jul 13, 2018

I want to show a drop-down list of all scenes and slides in a course, pulling the scene and slide titles and the hierarchy in automatically. In Lectora this is easy as could be: When inserting a table of contents, you just choose "Drop-Down List" and there you go; you can put it anywhere you like, and show or hide it any way you like.

I do not see a way to do this in Storyline 360. I see Storyline's automatic "menu", of course, but it is a space hog and I have yet to find a way to show it on a separate slide or layer, or a way to trigger it from a custom button. Also, I've seen many samples of drop-down menus, but every sample I've seen has choices typed in by the developer; that's not practical for large courses.

Am I missing something that would let me show the built-in menu when I click a custom button, and either:

  1. Let me show it where I want it instead of where Storyline thinks it should be; or
  2. Let me show it as a drop-down list?

Hey Stan!

It sounds like you've already seen Storyline's player sidebar menu, but did you know you can move that menu to a topbar tab? Here's how!

  1. Open the Player Properties Window.
  2. Select the Menu under Player Tabs.
  3. Use the Up and Down buttons to move it to a Topbar Tab on the player.

Let me know if that's what you had in mind!

Ayssa, yes, I did know that -- but that's still where Storyline thinks the menu button should be. We have a course template with our own button where we want it, and where our learners have come to expect it. Can I show an automated table of contents from our own button, have it show where we want it, and have it show in a drop-down list?

Ouch. Thanks for the answer; it's certainly not what I was hoping for, though, so I have two follow-up questions:

  1. Can JavaScript access the scene titles, slide titles and course hierarchy? I'm wondering if it might be possible to write a script to iterate through the scenes and slides and build the menu for us. (As noted, building and maintaining a menu manually is not practical for large courses.)
  2. Where can I submit a feature request? ;-)
