I'm building a slide interaction with three steps. I want to show layers when the slider is dragged to point zero and point 2. The initial position is in the middle. However, when I add a layer, the base layer becomes black and white. How can I retain the original colors of the base layer even after adding a new layer?
Is it not possible to add transparent layers, where each layer has an additional element on the base layer?
When you switch to a layer in the Storyline authoring environment, then the baselayer is shown grayed out. That's by design. When you preview or publish your content, the baselayer will be shown as designed underneath any layer that is shown on top.

Oh great! Thank you so much for letting me know that. I was so worried. :)
